Cape D’Aguilar

If you’re tired of Disneyland, Ocean Park, and all the other staple itinerary spots in visiting Hong Kong, you may want to try going to Cape D’Aguilar – one of the most beautifully kept paradise of Hong Kong in my opinion.

Cape D'Aguilar

“Cape: A cape is a large piece of land that sticks out into the sea from the coast”

Shutterbugs will surely feast as the huge waves unapologetically hit the rocks and as the jade waters take the color away from the beautiful reddish (yellowish) brown boulders.

Climbing and hiking can be a little taxing. You also need to be cautious of your steps as it is a cliff. It will, however, be worth all the efforts as you are rewarded with the panoramic view of the sea and the nearby islands.

What to see:

1. Cape D’Aguilar Lighthouse – The place houses a hundred year old lighthouse which, sadly, I don’t have a great photo of.

2. Crab Cave – apparently it’s been named as such because it resembles a crab claw if viewed from the top. If you get too scared or too tired to go up, the view from below is still picturesque.

3. Thunder Cave – It’s pretty easy to miss visually because it’s hidden in the bushes, but you’ll surely hear the sound of the waves.

4. Miss Willy – It’s basically whale bone display. When I was searching for more details, I read about it being a killer whale performer from the Ocean Park.

5. Everything else!

How to get there:

1. To get to Cape d’Aguilar, you may take the MTR to Shau Kei Wan Station.

2. From there, go to the bus terminal and take Bus number 9. It should be in isle J or K, there’s a direction board when you exit the MTR station and some people misinterpret and queue up there.

3. The bus should stop at Cape d’Aguilar hike starting point, otherwise, it will indicate and you may alight in the Quarry stop. You should also be able to see the below sign before it turns left for Shek O (the Cape is on the right).

Note: On the way, you will pass by the starting point for the Dragon’s Back trail (To Tei Wan stop), many passengers will alight there – don’t get pressured (haha).

4. From the bus stop, you may either take a cab up to the radio station or commit to walking all the way through (we walked).

5. Upon reaching the Radio station, you will see the below clearing on the left side, this will lead you to the path going to the Marine Reserve. From there, just keep going and you should be able to reach the photo spots.

6. You may retrace your steps back to Shau Kei Wan station once done.

…thoughts

Overall, Cape D’Aguilar is such a great choice of destination in visiting Hong Kong – especially if you’re a sucker for landscape views, nature photography, and a good hike. The best part of it all is, you can visit for free! Having said that, should you decide to bring food or disposable water bottles, be mindful of your trash and bring it back with you to preserve the serenity of the place. When we went there, there were plastic bottles on a few spots photobombing the beautiful view…
